We are a five doctor, forward-thinking practice, based in a modern purpose-built surgery.  We are committed to learning and to improving the services we offer you.

Our aim is to provide caring, high quality healthcare and advice in a welcoming and supportive environment. 

Our practice was the first in Plymouth to introduce the “GP Access" service, designed to give you easy telephone access to a doctor.   We offer every patient who requests a doctor's appointment or advice, the opportunity to speak to a GP over the phone.  

Wherever possible we aim to call you back within two hours. This means patients don’t have to make unnecessary visits to the doctor – great for busy people, carers, parents and people who work.      

If you need an appointment the doctor can arrange this for you.  Most of our patients choose to see the doctor on  the same, or next, day and we can usually arrange this.  However our system means that, if you prefer, you can book an appointment in advance. Just ask the doctor if you would like to be seen on a different day. 

We are open  for calls from 8.30am.  Please phone before 10am if at all possible

We recognise that a few of our patients do not have access to a phone or have difficulty using one (e.g. because of hearing or language difficulties). If this is the case and you wish to see or speak to a doctor, please come to the surgery and talk to our receptionists about how we can best help you. 

We do not take repeat medication requests over the phone, please come to the desk or email.

Zero Tolerance

We strongly support the NHS policy on zero tolerance. Anyone attending the surgery who abuses the GPs, staff or other patients be it verbally, physically or in any threatening manner whatsoever, will risk removal from the practice list. If necessary, we will summon the police to remove offenders from the practice premises.

RCGPPLEASE USE THIS SERVICE RESPONSIBLY

We are facing ever increasing demand, along with a national shortage of doctors and nurses.  Please help us to continue to provide a safe, prompt service for our patients who are unwell. Before phoning, please consider if you really do need to speak to a doctor or nurse at the surgery or if there is another option.

Many minor conditions resolve on their own or with simple self care and do not need advice from a GP.

  • Use the pharmacy, NHS Choices website or 111 for advice on coughs, colds, hay fever, warts and other minor conditions. 

  • Click on the "when should I worry" and minor illness sections below for advice and leaflets about a range of illnesses and conditions.

  • The Cumberland Centre is open 9-9 each day for minor injuries

  • For most muscle and joint pains you can self refer for physiotherapy and/or take painkillers from your local pharmacy

  • For stress, anxiety and other mood problems, you can self refer to Plymouth Options for counselling, support and talking therapies 

When you call, we have asked our receptionists to ask what your phone call is about so they can direct you appropriately.


OUT OF HOURS

NHS England have now introduced the 111 service.  its aim is make it easier for patients to access local health services when they have an urgent need.  It replaces NHS direct. If you need to contact a GP out of hours please dial 111.  They will then direct you to the most appropriate service including Devon Doctors.


WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU ARE REFERRED BY YOUR GP TO SEE A PARTICULAR CONSULTANT OR SPECIALIST?

This leaflet describes what you can expect to happen when you are referred to see a specific consultant or specialist at a hospital or community health centre


PHARMACY FIRST

Is a new scheme which allows people with certain minor ailments and conditions to go straight to their pharmacist to receive a consultation without needing to visit their GP to get a prescription first.

Your Pharmacist is a qualified health care professional who can help with your health problems and will offer you a private space to talk with you about your symptoms.

If it is something more serious, then they will direct you appropriately.  Don’t wait for a doctor’s appointment. Go straight to your pharmacy

Conditions:  Cough - Cold - Sore Throat - Fever - Earache - Thrush - Teething - Threadworms - Blocked Nose - Hayfever - Athletes Foot - Diarrhoea - Cold Sores - Skin Rashes - Eye infections - Mouth Ulcers and more

Our practice is inspected by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) to ensure we are meeting essential standards of quality and safety. In 2015 St Levan Surgery was rated "Good" overall, and "Outstanding" in two areas: "Responsiveness" and "Care of people whose circumstances make them vulnerable".
